Hi my friends!
I have already finished my book for independence reading "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. I'm so exiting about this book. I really didn't expected this ending. He spent a lot of time in the sea catching fish and in the end he hooked it, but it wasn't a happy end for this story. He was very tired, but his aim was to tie a big fish to his boat. After he hooked a fish there was a lot of blood and because of this, sharks swam towards his fish. Santiago was starving and he ate a fresh dirty fish and seaweed. It was really disgusting for him. He was happy that he caught a fish, but a huge group of sharks ate his fish. The Old Man was upset, and he began to kill the sharks. It was useless, because the sharks had already eaten the fish and as a result only a skeleton of the fish was left, which he wanted to hook all his life. He returned to his village and saw only a fish tail and sword from marlin. At the end of the story a lot of the other sailors were impressed because of the fish's length. The boy said that he would start fishing with Saintiago and Manolin will bring good luck. "The old man was dreaming about the lions". The End.
I'm impressed and now I have an idea about the main idea of this story. Santiago always had bad luck, but he never gave up. He believed that he needed to give his whole life to catching a big fish. For me, a big fish it is like an unattainable dream, which I want a lot. In this book the author shows us that you can achieve your dream or wish, no matter what situations or status you have. We can see the strength of Santiago's character. He did what he wanted, but not very wisely, so he lost everything. It is a good lesson for me that I should do as much as I can, and I will achieve all my goals. Hemingway didn't write a simple ending to this story, he created an ending where you can think about it and start searching for your own meaning in this story. I recommend reading this book to everyone because it really was worth it. It is the second time I have read Hemingway's stories and I like his writing. Moreover, I hope that I will read more novels by this author soon.
Thank you for your attention,
Follow your big fish.

Hi Vicky - I'm glad you enjoyed this book and found a lot of meaningful messages in it. I agree that persistence (see what I did there?) is an important theme in this story; Santiago continued to work toward his goal even though he met a lot of obstacles along the way. What do you think the last sentence of the book means?
ReplyDeleteHi Vicky! The further the more I was impressed that the old man was loosing his fish (the shark ate) and it's very sad ending that he returned to his village with a little piece of this fish. Unfortunately, we will have too many difficulties in this life, therefore it's important to never give up. We can lose the battle but not the war.
ReplyDeletehello, your blog was very informative about ending of this story. I was disappointed because I thought that he can bring this fish to his village. What do you think were there people who don't believed that he had caught this fish?
ReplyDeleteHi Vika
ReplyDeleteVery interesting book, maybe I will also take it to read.
The book teaches us not to give up even in case of failures.
If you failed on your way to your goal, would you continue your way like this old man or not?
