Heey y'all! π
I've got a new book to read and discuss with you. It is called "The Enemy" by Desmond Bagley. Firstly, I wanna say that it starts with a couple of fascinating quotes. One of them says: "We have met the enemy, and he is ours" and another is "We have met the enemy, and he is us." Interesting beginning, I think. In the first 2 chapters I have read, the main characters met each other at the party; they had a conversation one on one, fell in love and had a couple of dates. It took some time to make their conversation more personal while the time at the party and in the taxi. Therefore, finally, the author managed to introduce Penelope Ashton and Malcolm Jaggard to us. I found out what Penny does and got to know a little about her family, especially about her father's, George's, interests and values, and her sister, Gillian. There is an information that they live upper-middle-class life, but Ashtons didn't have much stuff for their house of that size. Their family ran a couple of manufacturing firms producing something in a chemical line and specialized on high-impact plastics. So this is the story about a rich girl with a lot of money and plain guy who is an economist. Everything was going well; Malcolm was thinking of proposing to Penny, he was waiting for that very moment when they are alone but Penny, Ashton and he were sitting together in lawn chairs talking. Suddenly, they heard a piercing scream several times. It was Gillian. Someone throw the acid on her face. They called an ambulance car and police.

This story is interesting for me so far. I liked it started from the party and then dating. It's close enough to real life. The funniest for me was that Malcolm didn't pay attention for her wedding ring first and was thinking about the marriage with her being known each other only few weeks. Next thing which surprised me was Penny's invitation to her house to meet Malcolm to her family. It was too early for doing that, I think, too unpredictable, too light-headedly and too confusing for me. Now, I guess that something must happen and Malcolm will get in trouble. That incident with facial acid burn hooked me much more and now I am wondering who made it to her and why, and how everything is connected here.
Thanks for your attention! Enjoy your life and ours blog! :)
Hi Lana - I haven't read this book; it sounds like a mysterious thriller (although it started out sounding like a love story). I'm interested to find out what will happen next; you said that maybe Malcolm will be in trouble. Do you think Penny will be on his side, or is she somehow an enemy?
